Exploring Our Weather Data

We have been very lucky to have some of our blogging friends adding data to our spreadsheet over the last few months. Last Monday while our Grade 6 students are away on an excursion the Grade 5 students had time to explore the collected data.

First of all Mrs S gave out a print out of each sheet from our master spreadsheet and challenged us to work out which marked dot on a map matched our data. We had to read the data carefully to find some clues to the locations and use our prior knowledge about the Northern and Southern Hemispheres to help us. The dates confused some of us because the month was written before the day.

We then created some visual information based on the data from our spreadsheet and began adding this to a collaborative Google Doc. Even though we worked hard on Monday we have not finished adding our graphs and charts. We experimented with using MS Excel to create some of our graphs and learnt some new skills. Others chose to create a calendar with icons or  a chart. Take a look at our work so far.

It was interesting to see the similarities and difference in our weather around the world.

    Hello fellow bloggers,
    It was quite fun making graphs and calenders of the data some other classes collected.
    Looking at the weather from other places helped to see the weather pattains.
    Data is useful for finding pattains and predicting the weather for the future.

    Hi Everyone

    The graph that I did was on the rainfall at Tipperary Station. It showed all the dates of the information that we got to help usmake our graphs, charts and calenders. It had the amounts going up in coloured tubes with the number of rainfall on top of them. I had the dates down the bottom and the numbers from 0-80 up the side.
    The highest number amount of rainfall was 80.

    Hello
    i think that its shows us the graph of weather and how its been reacting and its helpful for scientists with stuff like climate change but for all of us we find it handy just to nknow how the weather has been somtimes it could show a pattern of how our weather has been lately.

    i have learnt that hobart has a mixture of temperatures .
    The Tipperary station doesnt have much diffferent temperatures .

    Hi guys I think the data shows that in North California the coldest temperature was -4 and the highest temperature was 29 round about. Bye everyone from Sam.

    Hi all,
    The data tells us that weather can be very odd when you see two side by side because they can be different it can be very hot or very cold.

    Hi Class,
    We learn from this data that in hobart the lowest tempreture was 10 degrese on more than one day and the highest tempreture was 30 degrese on more than one day again.

    Hi bloggers

    what does a weather data tell us? Well thats a hard one the weather data tells us how the weather has changed in the past and what it will be like in the future. It also tells us what things we will be able to do in the day or wether it will rain or be really sunny.

    Hi Class,
    The graph from Tipperary Station shows that the distance between the maximum and minimum temperatures is very even throughout the week that the temperatures were recorded.

      Thanks for leaving a comment on our blog. We found it very interesting to try and guess which data set belonged to at the start of our lesson.

      Have you ever collected weather data over time?

      We are just starting to have cooler days and nights as Autumn begins it’s third month.

    We enjoyed learning about the weather in your area. It makes a difference with you having summer and we were still in winter/early spring.

    It would be interesting to collect once or twice a month for the entire year to then compare your summer and our summer.

    Our fifth grade students are just finishing up their weather unit. Our second graders did it earlier in the year.

      Thanks for the comment, Mrs Todd.

      We will try and remember to keep adding data to our spreadsheet during the year. Just recently we had a very warm day for May when it reached 24 degrees. The average daily maximum for May is 14.5 degrees. Our local newspaper has a great summary of our local weather online. If you scroll down to the bottom of the page there is an almanac with some interesting statistics. Do you know what an almanac is?
